AHC: An American Trianon

So as some background, after the treaty of Trianon, the then Hungarian government complained bitterly about the loss of territory and commissioned a whole series of articles in entente nations decrying how unfair it was. Many of such articles featured maps of said entente nations being divided in what they claimed would be a similar way, though of course they tended towards the absurdist for effect. The following is one they made for the USA.

(Warning, it was made in the 1910's and contemporary language we would find offensive is used.)

So the challenge is, make that division of America in a post war treaty a reality.

A combination of increased American-British geopolitical competition, Anglo-Japanese co-operation and a increasingly racist government in Washington ought to do the trick. Any war that would result in an American Trianon would be a utter mess.

The American identity is so strong by the 20th century that I believe that any loss of land to a foreign power would make it very, very hard for said foreign power to control it (especially if its in the continental US). I can imagine an alt-TL where the US balkanizes in the 20th century, but one where the US is partitioned by foreign powers is too off-the-wall.
