The World of Thursday Next

I've just finished the first two Thursday Next novels by Jasper Fforde, and in addition to the premise of being able to enter literature, the world of the novels is also a fun if very implausible alternate history.

-The Crimean War has been going off and on for over a century, apparently with intermittent phases of conflict like the Hundred Years War. Currently the Russian have the upper hand, especially after the disastrous charge of the light armoured briaged :)D).
-England is a republic with a President, while Wales is a socialist republic. I can't remember if it's explained in the books or if I only saw it in one of Fforde's online annotations, but the origin of this is that the Merthyr Rising is more successful, and with the Crimean War still on Lenin doesn't return from London and instead leads a revolution in Wales. Additionally, Russia is still under the Tsars.
-Churchill is not a historical figure at all and the Nazis occupied England until they were finally pushed out in 1949.
-Lord Nelson lived for an additional ten years until French revisionist time travelers shot him at Trafalgar.

Very implausible yes, but it makes for a fun backdrop to the books. Anyone else read this and have any speculation of what's going on in the parts of the world not mentioned?
