WI Eco-terrorism was a real phenomenon

In the 90s high on the whole end of history thing, one of the future threats to nation states was predicted to be hard line eco-terrorists who went beyond mere vandalism and protesting to attack significant industrial and corporate targets in a bid to try and change policy, or simply destroy those that they saw as destroying the earth.
A significant amount of media in the late 90's and early 00's made such groups their fictional villains.

However in reality this threat never really materialised. But what if it had? What if instead of political lslamic fundamentalists being the boogeymen of the early 21st century it was radical eco-terrorists?

Well, for some people whose income relies on environmentally damaging businesses, eco-terrorism is already a threat. The Sea Shepherds, an anti-whaling group, while praised as heroes in some environmental circles, is considered a eco-terrorist group by the Japanese government.

I don't know how you can make ecological terrorism a threat on par with Islamic terrorism (hard to be worse than the group who slammed planes into several buildings, killing over three thousand people).

I mean what if eco-terrorists mounted attacks on a similar scale.

Given the threat that climate change poses to the world and human civilization in particular there is at least a similar potential strength of motivation to fundamental Islamist who see their cultures as being trampled on and persecuted by westerners.

Ecoterrorists could do attacks like the OKC bombing or Aum's sarin gas attack which could kill thousands and cause huge panic if done properly, but it would be a one off thing since the feds would immediately spring into action and start cracking down on anyone remotely linked to ecoterrorism and it's highly unlikely you'd ever see anything on that magnitude again done by ecoterrorists.

A bit earlier than your notional time line calls for, and apparently not only motivated by enviornmental causes..

We had a case of random setting cars in flame a couple of years ago.
Surprisingly simple.
Never caught whoever was responsible.

But for large-scale attacks there's always the danger of doing more economical damage by the attack itself.
Ecoterrorism against atomic energy? Goes not.

A group that goes murdering selected leaders of especially environmental damaging companies is possible, working like RAF or NSU.

Who knows what the future will bring?
The Western World and the former European communist countries exported much of the visible pollution to the third world and pretty much ignored climate change since then.

If Friday for Future radicalise anything can happen.

There have been quite a lot of concerns and problems concerning genetic engineering and GMO research in France and other European countries where there has been destruction and targeted attacks on fields, farms, gardens, etc. which are responsible for research. Apparently it has utterly stymied research. Now, this is more sabotage, but a more militant organization could probably count as terrorism, or the definition of terrorism can be expanded to cover it. Maybe have a few radicals attack some of the researchers, either by accident or intentionally, and it could start to be classified as eco-terrorism.

If some radicalized college students with a few slightly older people with some pilot training did 9/11 in the name of the environment, I wonder what impact that would have.

Biological weapons are kind of the gold standard for the “humans are the problem” type folks, especially because they’re much more likely than say Al-Queda types to be collectively indifferent to their own survival (in contrast to a suicide bomber motivated by their community).

Private security firms would be much larger and much better equipped because environmentally damaging businesses would be hiring them to provide security because it will be cheaper then paying exorbitant insurance costs.
