How? At the Marne, the German armies had outrun their logistics.
Why? Did the French army spontaneously collapse? You can screw them up a little (No taxi reinforcements, etc) but not to that point.
When? Are we talking 1914? The longer the war goes on, the nastier things become afterwards.
