Blue Skies in Camelot (Continued): An Alternate 80s and Beyond

Honest mistake on my part, though Adam West, James Brolin, and Burt Reynolds were seriously considered for the role. Brolin actually bought a house in London thinking he got it.
You also have the opportunity for someone less conventionally handsome to play the role. Fleming himself described Bond as looking like Hoagy Carmichael, so there's a reference point.

Didn't know some Americans were considered to play versions of 007.

Wow. Wish more Americans had been able to take on the role.
John Gavin actually, Cubby Broccoli insisted that he have his salary paid because they were so far along on Diamonds Are Forever before UA insisted on Sean Connery coming back.

So if a pub trivia question ever comes up on how many actors were paid to play James Bond, it's more than you think...

I adore this idea for a spin-off thread. Years ago, I attempted something called "Blue Skies in Camelot: Closer to Home" which was essentially supposed to be this... A microhistory thread that told the stories of ordinary people ITTL. I will definitely launch this sometime soon, and put a person or two in there to get the ball rolling. Love the ideas you have here, your Lordship.

Assuming this situation isn't butterflied, it's certainly possible for Dahmer to be caught earlier. It's a shame how often victims are ignored or not listened to by the authorities.

Lazar Koliševski has, for the moment, succeeded Tito. Given that Tito had designated him as his heir apparent several years before Tito's death, Koliševski has an added sense of legitimacy here. That said, he's already 67 himself by 1981. The time is fast approaching for Yugoslavia to either A. Need a new generation of leadership and to rethink it's structure or B. Develop a plan for how to dissolve peacefully.

Do not fear. Ghostbusters (or Ghostsmashers, etc.) Will be covered in 1984.
Did Djemal Bijedic survive here? If so he’s a good deputy to Kolisevic who could make an eventually successor himself
I also proposed an idea for an alt Bond with minimum modifications. This may result in some retcons but I think it might be worth doing.

1962: Dr. No. Largely untouched due to butterflies.

1963: From Russia with Love. Again largely untouched.

1964: Goldfinger. Untouched.

1965: Thunderball. Largely the same. Notably the scene where Connery’s bond presses a woman for sex is lambasted later. Alternately they could get rid of it (who knows, Marilyn’s denouncing Goldfinger as sexist rubbish might cause a bit more blowback).

1967: OHMSS. Due to butterflies the weather in Switzerland is good enough that they proceed with this one. Bond falls truly in love, and the events of Casino Royale are hinted at (namely that he fell in love and she broke his heart). He also meets Blofeld for the first time. Donald Pleasence is Blofeld here.

1969: YOLT: Blofeld’s plan is to provoke World War III, and his machinations bring both parties very close to the edge; not sure it would involve the space program if it’s a joint operation but I can definitely see Blofeld doing something. Bond and Blofeld have their final fight, ending with Bond strangling Blofeld to death. Notably, in an INCREDIBLY ballsy move Bond and Kissy end up together; Bond falls in love with her over the course of the movie and she helps him come to terms with Tracy’s death. The climax even sees Blofeld trying to cruelly kill her (he taunts Bond about how he’ll have to watch another woman he loves die).

1971: Diamonds Are Forever. Connery extracts conditions in exchange for his return. Because he rather liked the ending of YOLT he insists that Bond not sleep around, and be faithful to Kissy. Plenty O’Toole hits on him, but Bond politely refuses her advances. The plot is some villains trying to revive Spectre, and Bond only agrees to come back to make sure they stay dead.

At this point Connery bows out. There are some fears of the series having run its course but ultimately they bounce back with a clear reboot. To differentiate from Connery the plots are more grounded and based on the books (though due to increasing feminism Bond is more a chivalrous pervert. He’ll sleep around but never bang women without consent, and he treats his lovers with courtesy.

The Spectre controversy becomes less of an issue due to YOLT wrapping it up. Blofeld goes down as a milestone in pop culture villainy but new evil organizations replace Spectre going forward.

I also think that Marilyn might finally deign to appear in a Bond Film if the script impresses her.
A 1967 OHMSS starring Connery is sort of the holy grail of the series, so I’d very much like to have seen that happen. Intros Blofeld a lot better too

Djemal Bijedic did survive ITTL. As of 1981, he is serving in Kolisevic's government.

A little to add on regarding Bond...
I love the opening sequence of For Your Eyes Only (1981). Since half of it was a giant finger to the guy who had the rights to Blofeld (can't remember the name, feel free to correct me.), I want to preserve Bond visiting Tracy's grave.
Now, in our timeline, this was added with the assumption that Roger Moore would bow out after Moonraker. Bond visiting Tracy's grave was to establish continuity.
So, I propose that a new actor play James Bond from 1981's movie.

My picks will be the same as the possible candidates from our timeline, with a wildcard.
01. Lewis Collins
02. Michael Billington
03. Michael Jayston
04. Timothy Dalton
05. Christopher Reeve (he'll probably take this role to diversify his portfolio, so to speak...)
Feel free to add on any other actors, the only limitation is them being from the British Isles (Lazenby isn't around here.)
Julian Glover is playing Bond.

Finally Mr. President, you've brought this life again on "Blue Skies in Camelot: Closer to Home". I've accidentally found this alternate timeline of yours more than a year ago that I'm impressed with this one. And now, it's been almost 5 Years since you've created this and lastly got updated that went out of radar until recently mentioned genius! Bring it back genius!

Hope that Jeffrey Dahmer was caught up and arrested earlier ITTL, so that his crimes would've spread. We're waiting for other famous and dangerous criminals of the decade that should've been arrested and put behind bars as well genius.

I don't know how far Lazar Koliševski would lead Yugoslavia as the decade goes on ITTL, I hope he can find his next successor that can lead the country towards 21st Century. We're waiting for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo.

It should always remain Ghostbusters genius no matter what happens by the time we arrived to the Pop Culture of 1984 ITTL.

I also proposed an idea for a James Bond Franchise ITTL with minimum modifications. This may result in some retcons but I think it might be worth doing.

Interesting ideas indeed genius! Alright then, OHMSS would be premiered in 1967 ITTL, and YOLT in 1969 ITTL. I've also want to asked a question about Ann-Margret as Helga Brand in YOLT in 1969 ITTL, would she be in it or not? I think President JFK would've watched and loved all of the movie franchise while he was in office, with YOLT and DAF after he left in 1969 ITTL. With Second Wave Feminism on the rise during this decade, I hope that character of James Bond is respectful to every woman he met ITTL.

True. I've read that the idea of having the Ghostbusters be a start-up business was inspired by how many start-ups were being built at the time. I could still see the latter of these being a plot point here. Maybe instead of Peck being a bureaucrat, he's a Wall Street Shark who wants to hurt the Ghostbusters' business so that he can buy up their tech and launch his own brand? (Like a corporate raider).
Walter Peck as a Wall Street Yuppie in Ghostbusters ITTL? Why not genius, I second it already! Speaking of The Yuppie Culture, would they be on the rise and influenced the country Mr. President?

Don’t get me wrong I love Harold Ramis as Egon but I think Jeff Goldblum would be a hilarious fit for in the Role as Egon doing hijinks with Belushi’s Venkman Murphy’s Zeddemore and Aykroyd’s Stantz as a time Traveling Multi Dimension hopping Swat dressed exterminators in a black 1975 Cadillac ambulance with ultra violet lights but taking down There boss in a final showdown

a bit off topic but i have some questions about TTL

1. will the simpsons end at season 10 complete with the original ending of marge being having bunny ears

2. what will SEGAs commercials look like in a more progressive america (i bet segas ads are even more edgy ITTL, not only mocking the nerdy aspect of nintendo but also the girly aspect as well (which might be controversial these days) (would the sega saturn be successful ITTL and sega surviving into the 21st century)

3. without the regan era split in the toy isle in the 80s would we see more females get into gaming (the right way (like playing games like cave story, petz 4, sonic cd, vib ribbon, klonoa and DDR), not just playing candy crush, barbie fashion designer and farmville), what would nintendo look like ITTL (i bet its like what the DS and Switch eras were when those were at their peak except with the alternate design of the NES then known as the advanced video system with the computer keyboard that allowed you to program games) (would indie games become popular a decade earlier like you seen with the commodore 64 but with better cooler hardware)

4. again without the gender divide when it comes to toys will lego continue making their classic sets with their OG aesthetic with the classic colors and minifigs well into the 2000s (would bionicle not be a thing ITTL) (i could just imagine the ads feat jack and jill the lego maniacs instead of just jack/zack)

5. i hope this world treats autistics like normal people, as an autistic myself its currently embarrassing and depressing as an older zoomer seeing my friends/mutuals grow up, having kids and getting married while im still living with my mom all because i was in special ed because i was going though some s**t after my fathers death during the 2008 recession (i just hope chris chan and other autistics gets the help that they need to grow up without maladjustment, aba therapy, infantilization or abuse ITTL)

6. would anime become popular earlier ITTL (seeing how soap operas may become the american equivalent to korean or indian dramas maybe anime takes off earilier)

7. would furries not be stereotyped as sexual in its later years, with a more progressive america i think furries would be seen as a cool indie fandom rather than a bunch of bachelors (how it should have been all along)

just some ideas for you guys to share

Random thought related to SNL, but what if we had it so Charles Rocket fired from SNL. Looking at him, I feel like we could have him be the guy who plays RFK on SNL:

Speaking of SNL, how different has that been compared to OTL?

Announcement of "Closer to Home" (Redux)
Greetings all! I hope all is well with all of you.

I plan on posting an update sometime before the end of this week (probably Thursday or Friday). I would also like to try and get the Closer to Home (Redux) microhistory thread recommended by @LordYam up and running sometime soon. I can't promise that I will produce a ton of content for that thread right away, as I am absolutely swamped with work, graduate school, and just trying to keep up with the primary thread. But I would like to launch it before it gets set too far back on the backburner with a lot of other ideas.

So what is Blue Skies in Camelot: Closer to Home?

This spin-off is an attempt at a microhistory companion to the primary thread(s) for this timeline.

For those uninitiated, microhistory refers to history that closely examines specific people, places, and events that help to contextualize the broader trends explored by macro-history. Because the primary timeline mostly focuses on major events and historical personalities, the everyday folks who inhabit the world of the timeline can be and sometimes are lost in the shuffle. In order to explore how the changes present in Blue Skies in Camelot affects life for everyday people, I would very much like to write little microhistories and vignettes set in this world.

I would also *drumroll, please* like to invite all of you to join me in this as well.

What do you mean?

I would like to open Closer to Home (Redux) to submissions from you, my beloved audience. I invite you to create your own original characters, events, and stories that are more common and everyday than the big picture stuff that gets covered in the updates here on the primary thread. You could submit a character alone, or an idea for an event, or even an entire town to populate with as many people as you please. Really, this is meant to be a fun, interactive creative exercise more than anything, a chance to collaborate and fill in the gaps provided by the "top down" view of history.

Are there any guidelines or suggestions for submissions?

Just a few basics:
  • Start simple. Create a character, or a family of characters. Explore who they are, where they live. Then, begin to consider how the events of Blue Skies in Camelot might have impacted their lives. That said, feel free to think a little bigger. You could write short "snapshots"/vignettes/memoirs of that character, or full life stories if you wish. Let your imagination be your guide.

  • Your character/event/location should not divert significantly from the "canon" of Blue Skies in Camelot. Obviously, I give you creative license within reason, but I ultimately retain final creative control and edit privileges. If I feel that your submission doesn't quite fit into the world, I may ask you to consider edits.

  • Please be respectful of other users' ideas and submission. It takes a great deal of courage to share your thoughts with others on the internet. It requires that you make yourself vulnerable in front of strangers. I should know. I've been doing it for more than six years now. We're taking time out of our busy lives to create this world together. This is supposed to be fun. :)

  • Your submission MUST NOT violate any rules/guidelines put in place by the site. Follow the rules people!

Where will it be located?

I'm open to suggestions on this. I suspect that the concept might make the thread a better fit for Shared Worlds, rather than Post-1900 Discussion. But feel free to let me know what you think!
